A Check In with the second XGD installation from 20 years ago, York Downs
This week I had the opportunity to visit with an old friend at a club that TDI Golf has done extensive work at over the last 20 years. GCS Manuel Fernandez was the assistant back then when we completed our second ever XGD greens drainage installation at York Downs G&CC in Markham, ON just northeast of Toronto. TDI Golf is just underway with a major restoration of a few select golf holes and bunkers this fall, and a full restoration of 27 holes of bunkers in to early summer of 2014 with golf architect Jeff Mingay .
Back in those days our greens drainage capabilities were just evolving as we used an 18″ Ryan power sodcutter to pull of the project, and we didn’t have access yet to the microslit 2″ pipe we now use. However, after 20 years later, Manuel proclaims it is still performing admirably and is still outperforming other greens at his facility, while it used to be the biggest problem green at the club back then. Here is a shot of #4 West at York Downs:
Maybe it is just my poor memory, but I certainly don’t recall the area being nearly as heavily forested as it is in this photo, but Manuel says the trees were just saplings back then.
So, this green is just a shining example of the longevity we expect with every greens drainage installation we complete. With careful, positive grade on each foot of pipe we install, we can provide each and every client with a lasting long term solution to your subsurface gravitational groundwater issues.
Cheers, Poor Old Dirt & Grass Farmer
