XGD Bunker Project at Elyria CC, OH

In Bunker Drainage, Bunker Restoration, Classic Golf Architecture, Golf Course Capital Improvements, Golf Drainage, William S. Flynn

XGD Project Manager David Welsh recently completed a stunning restoration of the bunkers at a William Flynn designed sleeper southwest of Cleveland at Elyria Country Club . It was our first project working with golf architect/shaper Kye Goalby and XGD’s scope of work included sand removal, XGD Bunker drainage, edging, bunker bottom prepping, sod and sand installation. Having already outfitted the greens here with our XGD process a few years ago with GCS Pat Rodgers, it was a no brainer to continue on with our XGD bunker drainage process in the restored bunkers which includes:

XGD 2″ pipe installation at 8′ spacing and 8″ depth
Backfill with bunker sand directly over the 2″ pipe, same as our greens drainage operation

This process has several objectives, most importantly eliminating the peastone interface, which is just another layer for groundwater to build up surface tension in order to pass through it. We have noted our process eliminates the “wet sand” issue in conventional bunker construction, whereby the water is  visibly removed, but the bunker sand moisture is wildly inconsistent throughout the bunker bottoms.
But enough words, these two pictures illustrate the finished product best:

So please reach out to us if we might be able to provide an alternative to a conventional bunker restoration at your facility.

Cheers, Poor Old Dirt & Grass Farmer
