Westmoor CC Greens Restoration

 In Uncategorized

As greens superintendent at Westmoor CC http://www.westmoor.org/ in Brookfield,WI Jerry Kershasky wanted to have a part in the long term agronomic success of his greens. Many superintendents might be content to attempt to regrass their putting surfaces without the installation of subsurface internal drainage. Jerry had contacted XGD http://www.greensdrainage.com/ well in advance of this , in fact over a year before the desired installation date to begin a dialogue with our firm to reaffirm in his mind if our unique greens drainage restoration process was a good fit for his greens. The club at this time was also considering a sympathetic restoration of the overall club grounds and utilized Todd Quitno from the design firm Lohmann Golf http://www.lohmann.com/ . After which the club chose TDI Golf http://www.tdigolf.com/ as the restoration contractor. As you can tell by the picture above, the end product is one of which all parties should be proud of. The early lavish praise on the restoration by the Milwaukee area golfers is no byproduct of poor planning, as all involved planned meticulously for a stunning finished product.
Superintendent Jerry Kershasky wanted to use a different XGD backfill blend than we were used to using in the area. On true pushup greens in the greater Chicagoland area we choose the 60:30:10 sand organic mix from Waupaca Sand http://www.waupacasand.com/ . But, after extensive testing the top 4″ of existing greens topmix at Westmoor had an infiltration rate of 7″/hour already, and it would be foolish to slow that infiltration rate down over our XGD laterals.
So Jerry chose the 70:20:10 mix from Waupaca that was percing at around 7″/hr to more closely match that mix with the existing soil characteristics of each green. I signed off on it as well, especially since the regrassing effort will replace the existing poa annua species, and bentgrass roots love our trenches anyway with root depth observations at 7″, just 3 weeks after regrassing occurs.
All this said, please contact our firm to begin the dialogue to helping guarantee the long term agronomic health of your greens sward.
